Competition for efficient commercial refrigeration appliances – competition documents

ProCool Competition – Presentation and award ceremony within the Hannover Messe 2006 (24 April 2006)

Competition

As a European manufacturer of commercial refrigeration and freezer appliances you are kindly invited to take part in an international competition for energy efficient and environment-friendly appliances. In doing so you would have the possibility to present yourself as a progressive enterprise, which offers innovative and at the same time eco-efficient products. The competition is part of the ProCool Project.

The project is a joint effort of the Austrian Energy Agency, the German Energy Agency (dena), the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy (WI)and the Association for Consumer Information in Vienna (VKI). The project is supported by the European Commission in the context of the LIFE programme.

Objectives of the competition

Cold appliances of the following categories may be submitted to the competition:

  • AC 1: Refrigerator, closed, with a glass door, vertical, net volume 250-600litres (IVC4 according to EN 23953-1)
  • AC 2: Refrigerated cabinets (shelves), open, vertical, Total Display Area 1,5-4,5m2 (IVC2 according to EN 23953-1)
  • AC 3: Refrigerator, open, horizontal, for packaged convenience food, Total Display Area 0,5-2m2, no cooling counters for unpackaged foodstuffs (IHC3 / IHC4 according to EN 23953-1)
  • AC 4: Freezer, closed with a glass lid, horizontal, net volume 150-350 litre, no appliances with "Flip-Flop" lids (IHF5 / IHF6 according to EN 23953-1)
  • AC 5: Freezer, closed with a glass lid, horizontal, net volume>350 to 850 litre (IHF5 / IHF6 according to EN 23953-1)

The award-winning appliances must exhibit a high level of energy efficiency. Refrigerants and insulating materials containing HFCs must not be used.

In addition the project team, working together with users of commercial refrigeration appliances, has developed a series of criteria which guarantee that the appliances resulting from the competition meet the requirements of the market.

Conditions of Eligibility

All European manufacturers of plug-in commercial refrigeration appliances are eligible. All submitted product documents and test information must be written in either English or German. A form is being prepared for the submission which will make it easier to describe all competition entries.

Awards Ceremony and Presentation of the Appliances

The awards ceremony will take place as part of a conference which will be organized together with trade and industry organizations. Representatives of all relevant target groups will be invited to the conference.

Following the conference the competition results will be published via direct-mailing and professional journals. The award winners will have the opportunity to present their appliances during the conference.

The Jury

The jury will consist of members of the project organizers as well as political, scientific and trade representatives.
